If you’re currently trying to figure out what comes after high school, there’s a good chance you’re feeling a specific kind of pressure.
You’re constantly being asked:
- “Where are you going to school?”
- “What’s your major?”
- “What’s your five-year plan?”
And if you’re trying to follow Jesus, that pressure usually comes with an added layer of spiritual anxiety.
You find yourself staring at a crossroads, desperately praying: “But what if I choose something that’s not God’s PLAN for me?”
You wait for a skywriting sign, a dramatic gut feeling, or a perfectly detailed blueprint before making a move. Because what if you pick…
- The wrong college?
- The wrong gap year?
- The wrong path?
What if you accidentally derail your entire life?
Here is a quick reality check that will save you a massive amount of stress:
God’s guidance is usually a flashlight, not a spotlight.
As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Notice it’s a lamp for your feet. It shows you the very next step right in front of you, not the whole ten-mile trail.
Waiting for absolute, 100% certainty before you take action isn’t spiritual maturity. Most of the time, it’s just decision paralysis disguised as patience.
If you feel completely frozen trying to find “God’s perfect plan,” here is why taking a clear next step is always better than standing still.
1. You Are Incapable of Ruining God’s Plans
Let’s dismantle the biggest myth holding you back: the idea that you are powerful enough to accidentally ruin God’s sovereign will.
We often treat God’s plan like a thin tightrope over a canyon. We think, “If I make one wrong turn, I fall off into the abyss, miss my calling forever, and ruin my life.”
That mindset makes God out to be a fragile, rigid boss looking to trap you, rather than an almighty, loving Father who holds the universe together.
Look at what Job realized after going through the most intense trial imaginable:
“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2)
Read that again: no purpose of His can be thwarted.
You do not possess the power to accidentally throw God’s ultimate design off track with a wrong choice.
God isn’t up in heaven wringing His hands because you’re struggling to pick between two good options. Isaiah 46:10 reminds us, “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.”
This does not mean that destruction, and evil are part of God’s plan. Please remember the world is broken; not as a result of God’s decision but rather ours (humanity’s). So notice above in both Job and Isaiah the key word is His purpose.
Purpose is bigger than steps or decisions.
How God’s purpose comes about may not always be pretty because we live in a fallen world, but it will always be victorious.
Therefore if your heart is truly seeking Him, He is more than big enough to work through your choices, your detours, and even your mistakes.
2. God Can’t Steer a Parked Car
It’s an old saying, but it holds up.
If a car is sitting in park in your driveway, you can turn the steering wheel all you want, but the car isn’t going anywhere. The moment you put the car in drive and start rolling forward, steering becomes effortless.
Spiritual guidance works the exact same way.
Many people expect God to reveal step ten before they are willing to obey step one. But scripture shows us that God almost always directs people while they are already moving.
- Abraham stepped out without knowing his final destination: “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8)
- The Disciples dropped their nets immediately without demanding a contract or a five-year strategy (Matthew 4:19-20).
Consider the wisdom of Proverbs 16:9:
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Notice that God establishes your steps…which means you actually have to be taking steps!
God is far more interested in your heart’s direction than your zip code. If you are seeking Him, He has zero trouble redirecting you if you start walking down the wrong path.
3. “God’s Will” Is a Posture, Not a Blueprint
God’s primary will for your life isn’t a hidden treasure map you have to solve. His primary will for your life is your character.
Paul makes God’s main priority for you crystal clear in 1 Thessalonians 4:3:
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification…”
Sanctification just means becoming more like Jesus.
- It’s learning how to love God and others well.
- It’s putting down your ego and serving people.
- It’s cultivating a heart of gratitude, grit, and humility.
You can fulfill God’s primary will for your life in a university dorm, on an outdoor trail, working a trade job, or taking a gap year.
As Proverbs 3:5-6 promises: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
When you yield your heart to Him daily, the terrifying weight of making the “wrong” external choice completely evaporates.
4. Clarity Comes From Action, Not Thinking
You cannot overthink your way into clarity.
You can make spreadsheets, scroll through hundreds of reddit forums, and weigh pros and cons for six months, but eventually, you have to test the water.
Clarity doesn’t come from sitting on your bed staring at the ceiling. Clarity comes from engagement.
As James 1:22 challenges us, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
In other words: faith is a verb. Knowledge is great but ultimately meaningless if you don’t put it into practice. You learn by doing, not just thinking.
- Wondering if you’d like a specific field? Shadow someone for a day.
- Wondering if a gap year is right for you? Start an application and see how the process feels.
- Wondering if you can handle a new environment? Step out of your comfort zone in a small way today.
The moment you take a clear next step, you gain real perspective. You start learning how God created you (Psalm 139:13-16)…what brings you life, what gifts you have been given, and where God is giving you peace.
Stop waiting for the fear to completely disappear before you move. Bravery isn’t the absence of fear, it’s trusting God enough to take the next step in spite of it.
