Imagine signing up for a massive road trip with a group of friends.
You pack your bags, chip in for gas, and pile into the back seat.
You’re excited to build memories with your people.
But the entire time you’re on the road, one of your friends keeps their noise-canceling headphones on and stares out the window. They don’t participate in any of the playlists, the gas station snack runs, or the late-night car conversations.
For the last 7 hours they’ve been in their own world.
And when the trip ends, they even complain that the journey felt incredibly lonely and boring.
There’s a loss here. Maybe even some hurt. For both of you.
By opting out of the experience, they impacted both your experience and theirs.
So reverse the roles for a second and consider this question honestly without judgment towards yourself: Are you entering this next season of life with a tendency to opt out of the world out around you?
Maybe you’ve become an absolute expert at “quiet quitting.”
- You show up to events just enough so people notice you’re there, but you never actually let your guard down.
- You scroll through life as a professional lurker. You watch everyone else form deep friendships and experience real transformation, while you stay safely on the sidelines.
- You’ve got the art of staying detached on lock.
Listen, I get it. The world can be scary. You didn’t learn to opt out because you didn’t want community or care about the people around you. It was out of protection.
But unfortunately that “protection” is keeping you from experiencing true belonging.
So what happens when you enter a season that requires your actual presence?
Often, the fast-paced transition from high school into adulthood exposes a major reality check: you cannot experience the benefits of a community you aren’t contributing to.
The fifth core value in our series is a direct challenge to the “opt-out” culture around us: Be All In.
The Myth of the “Perfect Experience”
To put it bluntly, a community isn’t a product you consume. It’s an environment you create.
It is incredibly easy to sit back and wait for a community, a church, or a college to hand-deliver a perfect, life-changing experience to you on a silver platter.
But if you are waiting for an environment to become flawless before you decide to engage, you’re going to be waiting forever.
Yeesh…talk about a waste of a season. 😅
To put it bluntly, a community isn’t a product you consume. It’s an environment you create.
Real growth doesn’t happen by osmosis. It requires you to take total ownership of your experience.
Here’s the beauty in that: You get to have influence in building the life you want.
The New Testament model of community requires everyone’s involvement.
Consider the picture the Apostle Paul paints in 1 Corinthians 10:17: “Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.”
Notice that word: all.
In God’s economy, a healthy community is a potluck, not a restaurant. You don’t just show up to be served; you show up bringing something to the table.
When you decide to hold back your personality, your gifts, or your honesty out of fear of rejection, the whole group suffers a missing piece. God created you to be part of the puzzle.

Stop Lurking, Start Engaging
So, what does it look like to take ownership of your experience in daily life?
It means intentionally choosing to be a full participant in the room you are currently standing in.
It means shifting out of a spectator mindset…
- Saying hi first
- Putting your phone on do-not-disturb during group discussions.
- Being the first one to grab a sponge to clean up after a meal, rather than disappearing.
- Leaning into hard conversations to resolve conflict rather than ghosting.
When you consistently practice being all in, your capacity for deep, lifelong friendships completely skyrockets.
You stop suffering from the fear of missing out, because you are finally fully present to experience it. It is in this space that you will find belonging.
The Ripple Effect of Being All In
In God’s economy, a healthy community is a potluck, not a restaurant. You don’t just show up to be served; you show up bringing something to the table.
When you choose to fully participate, you see how all our values lock together perfectly.
- Kaizen showcases our commitment to continuous, daily improvement. You can’t get better if you are only halfway invested. Improvement requires a 100% commitment to the process.
- Connecting belief to behavior. It’s easy to say you believe in unity and servant leadership. But being “all in” means doing the unglamorous things behind the scenes when no one is watching.
As Colossians 3:17 reminds us, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Did you catch that? Do it all. Not just the parts that feel convenient or make you look cool.
- Even our attitude of gratitude and getting outside our comfort zone tie in here. Leaning into an intense community when you feel tired, awkward, or homesick? That takes a massive amount of internal grit, a grateful posture, and a willingness to embrace growth.
Don’t Do This Alone
Community is necessary in being all in.
You very literally cannot be involved in a community…without a community.
So invite people into your growth.
We’ve seen firsthand how coming alongside our gap year students to teach them how to find belonging is what makes it stick. Personally showing them how to invest in any community they’re in will help build belonging long past their time at OneLife.
We’ve helped them move past the fear of being vulnerable so they can experience what it truly means to be part of a team that has each other’s backs.
If that’s something you want to learn alongside others with intentional coaching from our staff, we’d love to have you join us at OneLife! Start your free online application today.
